your current daily driver is wrecked in a tragic dumpster fire accident, what do you get to replace it?
for me, a Legacy sedan with a few of the overseas market B4 look add-ons would be my next daily ride.
I’m a family man so 4 doors would be a bonus
I live in Colorado, so the law says you must own a subaru at least every 3rd car.
I like the early 2000s styling.
I’ve owned a few GC imprezas and I think I’d like something a half step up towards grown-up territory.

I’m getting an OG Mini. I like to live dangerously.

Probably an R53 Cooper S. Or a MK1 Escort.

Flaunting the import legalities, the newest one of these I can get my hands on.

Not quite answering the question but close enough. I’m looking for my first car and to be blunt what it is going to be is completely dictated by how much it costs to insure and as of now the cheapest car for me to insure is the Mk2 MR2 at £760. Just got to find one now.

On the car front, I’m either going to sell the FR-S and get a Miata (unlikely, promised myself I would never buy a car so new again)..
Or in a month or so I’ll sell the 540i and pick up a XJR (preferably an XJ6r)
On the Bike front, I’ll be looking to turn the Triumph into a plated XR650R

I really want a Matrix XRS or Vibe GT.
But I’m also considering other cool cars that have 4 doors, 4 cylinders, a sunroof, and a manual transmission. Like the Mazdaspeed 6, Mazda 5, Accord sedan, G20t, 5th gen Camry, xA release series (VERY rare special edition with a sunroof that wasn’t otherwise available on the xA), and the Volvo V50.Maybe an Astra if I can find one with the awesome panoramic sunroof.
I might take a CTS or G35 if there’s a really good one for a good price with the manual. But I prefer 4 cylinders for better gas mileage.
As much as I’d love to feel like a star in a reasonably-priced car, the Aerio wasn’t available with a sunroof (shame since the digital dash is so cool). And the Elantra Touring is too expensive.

Probably a second gen GS300. Or possibly a first gen IS300.

I’m really torn between practical sensible car and high horsepower fun car.
I’d probably cry snot over losing my car and make a real shitty purchase.-... Like a multipla or a trabant.

I now have a beater truck, so my daily no longer needs to be practical.

Another S10 probably.
Or another E36 because I hate having money apparently.

If the FR-S got totaled today, I’ve got a few I’d consider.
Practical Options
: These would likely be paired with a cheap track beater (most likely a Miata, <90s Toyota, late 80s/90s Honda, or possibly a 240)
Toyota FJ Cruiser
Toyota Tacoma
Or just another 4th gen 4Runner, like I used to have (add 4wd and tow package)
Sports Car Options
: Keeping things fun!
2017 Mustang GT in Grabber Blue
ND MX 5 Club (Since apparently you have to go to the mid-level trim for an LSD...)
S2000 (Ideally a CR) I will own one someday
WRX (I hear these new ones are pretty good)

Ask the owner what’s wrong with it and why they let it sit and rot?

Chevy SS, no questions asked.

It’s one of those hidden gems of the used market that punches way above its price tag.

I would take the ‘16 as well with the winged grille, but the ford plan pricing makes the new one better. Either way, I do like the feel they have on the road.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:32 |

It would probably be a 2011-13 Cayenne S. Even though it’s borderline too nice to be stuck outside getting tree sap and bird pooped on all the time. My real plan is too hold on to my MDX for a few more years till I can afford a used 2016 though (facelifted styling, turbo V6 instead of a V8, and a few other other updates).
With some luck perhaps by then I’ll be able to add a detached garage (or at least a detached carport) too so it won’t have to sit exposed to the elements.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:34 |
|
MDX to Cayenne, an upgrade in badge and likely interior, do you think they are substantially different vehicles overall though?
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:34 |

Does it have to be the insurance value of the wrecked car? Cuz if it is all I’ll be able to get is a bicycle
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:34 |

yes! wheres the harm in asking.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:36 |

we’ll just assume all opponauts have excellent credit (likely due to our spouses careful bankbook management) and you can get a loan with your $22 from the insurance company payout as a down payment

An ‘06 GTO with the 6.0
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:44 |

Honestly, it would end up being something like this:
I used to pull an RV with my current truck, but despite not having one anymore, I still use my truck from time to time as a solid workhorse - I’d miss having that kind of usability with anything smaller.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:47 |

Me: would replace the XC90 with a XC70
Wife: would replace the Z4 with an XC60

I never liked the facelift B4 bumpers (or headlights, grille, or hood for that matter)
The pre-facelift bumpers were not bad. The pre-facelift Blitzen bumpers are even better.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:51 |

its all fairly irrelevant, I’d just as likely end up with a base model L sedan, and then have a half dozen ebay/craigslist alerts setup for the hood and bumpers and such, and never actually get any :P

I will sir!
![]() 08/09/2016 at 17:51 |

I would probably get a Hawkeye WRX wagon in white and save the rest of the money. Responsible yet still fun.

eeeeexcellent. go my minion, do my bidding

I’m still on the MR2 train. I’d get a nicer MR2.
Maybe
a turbo.

I’m trying to track down an Ecoboost flex with 2nd row captains seats and the appearance package. I tried negotiating for one Sunday but they wouldn't budge!
![]() 08/09/2016 at 18:48 |

I’d end up with a payment again. My tastes are varied. If I end up in Britain I’ll already be selling and getting whatever TVR I can.
In America:
W211 E55 AMG (though the prior version is much smarter)
X350 XJR
Porsche 996
BMW 128i
Pontiac Solstice (as nice as possible on budget)
![]() 08/09/2016 at 19:09 |
|
I'd probably get another second-gen Honda Fit. Preferably a facelifted model in red.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 19:28 |

Okay. Here’s what I’d do.
$1500 payout
$800 on a fleet van
$150 on Formica
$50 on a portable stove
$50 on a portable grill
$50 on misc pots and pans
$250 on a winch
$50 on bug nets
$36 on a fishing license
The rest on bait.
I’ll be camping in a van down by the lake.

a fleet!
for the spares
![]() 08/09/2016 at 20:25 |

I’d totally hoard them if I could. Ideally I need at least two. One for off road/recce/workhorse duty, one tuned like hell to be stupid fast. Plus a BRZ for the daily.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 20:29 |
|
The owner wasn’t home so I just took pictures of it instead
I’m not quite sure what’s wrong with it but that mess of fuses probably has something to do with it. Note the poorly painted trunk lid and the peeling paint on the rear bumper. Also, the left headlight was loose
![]() 08/09/2016 at 20:38 |

I mean, some part of me would say “screw it” and yearn for a Nissan Silvia, but an aging, right-hand-drive Japanese import isn’t very safe or practical as a daily driver for my current position in life.

Both have their plus and minuses. They sort of fill the same niche as far as what I want. Cayenne handles better overall. My MDX (2009) has better steering feedback since it’s hydraulic. Cayenne has a higher tow rating (I need at least 5000lbs since I have a bad habit of buying/selling classic cars that require a tow sometimes). MDX has the 3rd row, but since I’m divorced and only have 1 kid I no longer need it. Cayenne costs more to maintain, but I’ve only averaged 5k miles a year on the MDX so it shouldn’t be THAT much more. My MDX is the base model, so there would be more tech to enjoy in the Cayenne (most importantly bluetooth streaming). I’ve driven just about everything else in the class, and everything else sucks as far as driving dynamics besides the X5, but I’m ruling it out based on the reliability of the 2011 X5 my ex-wife has.

Daily driver (truck) lost in a dumpster fire? Dang, that sucks. Well, guess I’d be on the lookout for another Fiero. One that I wouldn’t mind piling the miles on. Even though I don’t need more cars... the dumpster fire would probably solve some problems, actually, if it didn’t affect my truck.
![]() 08/09/2016 at 21:29 |

it needs saving! and a cheap vinyl wrap would fix those paint issues

![]() 08/09/2016 at 21:33 |

the towing had to be the big divide. similar cars in a lot of ways, except for power

Yeah, even a Q5 or Macan would serve 90% of my needs, except for towing. I’ve thought about getting something smaller, and just paying for tows. I would like to still have something though in case my boy gets into karting in the next couple of years.
